POLYMER:  IF YOUR ARE UNABLE TO WATER YOUR TREES BE SURE TO READ THIS

Polymer greatly improves survival rate.  The polymer is granular and when added to water, absorbs up to 400 times its weight.  It enables seedlings to survive temporary moisture stress.  This is important to those plantings that will not receive supplemental water or where there is no water supply on the site.  A 1/2 pound bag will do about 60 trees.

RABBIT GUARD & BAMBOO STAKES

The rabbit guards are a plastic mesh tube ( diamond mush pattern) which is placed over a seedling to protect it from rabbits and other animals.  The guards are photodegradable in a 3-year period.  The guards are 18" long with a 4 " diameter.  Bamboo stakes may be used to anchor the guard around the seedling.

WEED BARRIER FABRIC INCREASES SEEDLING TREE SURVIVAL RATE

Weed barrier is a polypropylene geo-textile used to control weed growth and hold soil moisture in tree and shrub plantings, and enhance growth of tree and shrub plantings. A marked increase in survival rate and increased height and crown growth has been observed on arid-lands where weed barrier has been used on tree and shrub plantings. Use of weed barrier eliminates the need for mechanical or chemical weed control. In all but exceedingly dry year, no supplemental watering is needed when weed barrier is used.

Test conducted at USDA Grassland Experiment Station near Cheyenne, Wyoming show soil moisture under weed barrier to be 3 to 9 times higher than on nearby plots without weed barrier. Experience in Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota indicated survival rate of 95% or better when weed barrier was used.

Cost of weed barrier averaged over a 5-year period is comparable to drip irrigation systems and mechanical weed control. When using weed barrier time, effort and machinery is saved.

Weed barrier fabric is available from the Double El Conservation District at 504 Washington Ave., Simla, CO or phone 719-541-2359 x 101.
